Afghanistan is an Agricultural country. It’s not hard to see why, 80% of the population’s livelihood depends on it and 35% of the economy is comprised from the agricultural sector. Over the past 3 decades, a combination of war and drought have devastated the countries farming industry and transformed what was once the breadbasket of Asia into an importer of essential commodities like wheat and cooking oil.
Both national and international efforts are underway to promote the Afghan agricultural sector and change it back into a highly productive sector. Just recently the MoCI distributed over 4000 straw trays to be used in the grape and raisin harvests, to needy owners of grape vine plantations in the districts of Deh-Sabz, Kalakan and Qale-Murad Baig. Though greeted with appreciation, the government delegation conducting the distribution was also informed of the scale of this contribution by locals and of how much more needs to be done.
Locals claimed that they needed more investment in their plantations, quality improvement and standardization programs, and better marketing solutions for their products to gain access to foreign markets.
